Virtual Comedy
“Virtual comedy” sounds like something Jack Donaghy would pitch on 30 Rock. But far from being a sci-fi dystopia of an AI-rendered comedy show, virtual comedy is just (human) comedians performing. Digitally. I.e., performing live, but broadcast through your device.
And why not? For remote work, much of the job is already online, from video conferences to virtual meetings; team members rarely have to be in the same room, let alone the same state, to work together.
Many can still remember the early days of team collaboration through the various video-conferencing platforms, being asked to join meetings through Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet—where every virtual event was a chance to see how adept everyone was with different facets of the technology. A virtual background wasn’t tough to muster, but even changing it could make everything haywire. And who can forget when that lawyer accidentally made himself into a talking cat, uttering the now-famous line, “I’m not a cat.”
Nowadays—for the most part—many of the kinks have been worked out, and entering a digital meeting room can be done even on mobile devices in a pinch. You’re unlikely to see your boss in a feline filter (although if you were being laid off, this might reduce the sting a bit). It may be equally unlikely watching someone fruitlessly try to join one of the many online meetings accompanying the joys of the corporate world. Nowadays, these platforms are more than just a powerful tool; they’re indispensable to remote work and are being used incessantly.
So again, we say, why not enjoy some virtual comedy at work? We already do virtual interviews, dates, and yes, even court appearances. If you’re looking to reward your team or maybe spruce up a Christmas party or milestone event, you can’t go wrong with comedy. People love to laugh; it’s that simple. Requiem for a Dream is a great movie, but it’s not going to lighten the mood any time soon.
Booking virtual comedians is straightforward and has manifold benefits. So let’s get into it.
The Benefits of Virtual Entertainment
Virtual comedy is a boon to any enterprise, even if the company isn’t primarily online. As mentioned, you can do video conferencing from your phone (if you have to), and you can easily watch virtual comedy on your phone.
In a word: convenience. And what’s more convenient than clicking a link? It’s so easy; we do it countless times a day.
You also have accessibility. Virtual comedy lends itself to accessibility. Whether it’s part of a corporate fundraiser or you’re celebrating an IPO, virtual comedians can easily be used to bolster various events.
But that accessibility is also a two-way street. Because it also means there’s a greater pool of comedians you have access to because they don’t have to worry about travelling to get to you (which is also great if you want a far-flung comedian but don’t want to have the costs associated with travel).
Setting up for a party can be fun; there’s anticipation. Cleaning up after a party, less so. Likewise, when you’re setting up for an in-person event, there is some enjoyment as you have something to look forward to. When it’s over, you’re just cleaning up.
Booking virtual comedians means there’s zero physical setup. And yes, there’s not the most setup to begin with when it comes to comedy, but who likes to do extra work? Even if it’s just putting chairs back and throwing away paper plates.
And what if your company is mostly WFH? Well, these types might enjoy a treat like stand-up comedy even more. As convenient as working from home is, the downside is you’re working from home. It seems nice until you’re there all the time. It no longer feels as enjoyable. You need something special to shake things up.
Okay, but things must be a bit more complicated than just clicking a link, right? Sure, but not by much. So let’s talk about how you plan and book virtual comedy.
Booking and Planning for Maximum Enjoyment
REO Speedwagon is unequivocally one of the best bands that ever was and ever will be. But even they don’t just hop on stage and begin their setlist.
And yes, someone needs to coordinate with them for the booking. At Hire a Comedian, booking virtual comedians couldn’t be simpler. You’ll fill us in on a few crucial details, like budget, the date of your event, the type of performer you’re looking for, etc. We’ll then send you several clips of entertainers we think would be a good fit.
And to preemptively assuage some doubts: We specialize in booking clean comedians and corporate events. In fact, if we were McDonald’s, clean comedians and corporate events would basically be our French fries, i.e., our top-selling items. Which isn’t to say we don’t have more risqué comedians—or that the “non-clean” comedians can’t modify their sets. To paraphrase (multimillionaire) Dave Chappelle, you can’t feed your kids integrity sandwiches.
To return to our REO Speedwagon analogy, we’d highly recommend trying out whichever platform you plan to use prior to the date. And trying it out well in advance of the event. We’re also happy to assist you in this, as we’re well-experienced in navigating these waters.
One more recommendation (if you’re a company) is to implement analytical tools to measure the success of the event.
